Building of the month (July)

Our building for July, as interpreted by our Artist in Residence ‘Bill Hunt’ is Central Hall, University of York.

Listed: Grade II

Central Hall is a half-octagonal hall and used for meetings and examinations, as well as theatrical and musical performances. Central Hall can accommodate over 1100 people.

It is Grade II listed as is the West Campus landscape at University of York where it is sited.

As a landmark building at the heart of the University, Central Hall is undergoing a series of refurbishments to provide updated, multi-use space offering enhanced facilities for a wide range of users as well as improving accessibility.

Some history: It has hosted The WailersGeorge MellySoft MachinePink Floyd, and Paul McCartney.

Interesting Fact: The adjacent lake is the largest plastic bottomed lake in Europe.
