South Coast Universities – Good Sports!

The University of Portsmouth has selected the team that will design its new state-of-the-art indoor sports centre.

FaulknerBrowns Architects, an award-winning firm who won Sports and Leisure Architect of the Year’ at the 2017 Architect of the Year Awards, were selected following an internationally competitive procurement process. They will lead the team who will deliver the £50 million new sports facilities that form part of the University’s Estate Master Plan.

The building, to be situated on the University’s campus in Ravelin Park, will combine an eight-lane swimming pool, a fitness suite, sports hall, climbing wall and squash courts. It will provide first-class sports facilities for training, recreation and competition, and designs will also consider other requirements such as its use for social occasions, exhibitions and events.

The architects have challenging sustainability targets including minimising the building’s carbon footprint. The finished building will be flexible and adaptable to cater for a range of activities and to future-proof the building for years to come.

University Vice Chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said that the aim is to have a building that both the University and the wider city community can feel proud of.
