Lower Mountjoy Teaching and Learning Centre at Durham University

The RIBA Award-winning Mountjoy TLC at Durham University created a new focus for learning and teaching at the University in a prominent location, overlooking the city’s World Heritage Site. FaulknerBrowns' design moderated the scale of the 8,000m2 building in this sensitive context by articulating it as a series of 11 identical modules. These modules, each presenting longer, more highly fenestrated ‘main’ and shorter, less perforated ‘gable’ elevations, were rotated and handed to respond to functional and contextual requirements. A reductive approach to materiality and detail supports a sense of controlled variation within an overall collegiate approach.
