Interview with Philip Watson

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a Director and Head of Design at HLM Architects. I have Board responsibility for our education sector and I lead our Research and Development team.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

In terms of my architectural career my proudest and most fulfilling moments come when a project is handed over to the people who are going to occupy a building and they just love it.

What is your favourite thing about your career?

The fact that I get to draw things that get made. The act of making is a joy.

Describe HEDQF in a sentence?

Thoughtful people trying to make the built environment better for everyone.

What is your contribution to HEDQF?

I’m part of the Research Group, one of the key elements of HEDQF.

What does a good HE building mean to you – quote?

One that is sustainable in every sense, that will stand the test of time and support learning and personal development.

One thing about you that will surprise people?

I have two entries in the Guinness Book of Hit Records.

Have you had any other jobs beside architect?

Dishwasher, graphic artist, music journalist, venue promoter, market stall holder, caretaker, joiner, and musician …

What makes you laugh the most?

Dogs

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?

Driving a motorboat around Corfu finding secret coves to swim in.
