University spend on capital projects over the past five years was the subject of a recent feature in Architects’ Journal. The article by Richard Waite posed the question ‘Has the university building gold rush run its course?’

HEDQF Chair Julian Robinson commented:

“While there is still a relatively long tail of higher education development in the pipeline, the halcyon days of [university] capital development are certainly over, in my view.”

Though the “distinct nervousness in the sector” can be attributed to many factors differing widely between institutions, uncertainty around Brexit and the pending review of post-18 education led by former investment banker Philip Augar are causing universities to become jittery about continuing to invest so heavily in their estates.
