Duke Street Riverside at Norwich University of the Arts, designed by Hudson Architects

Hudson Architects’ Duke Street Riverside at Norwich University of the Arts combines teaching spaces and student accommodation within a slender industrial red brick envelope. The riverside context is used to create a sunny new public plaza, where elephant-stepped seating forms a theatrical interface between the public and the building. This external space is mirrored by an internal counterpart, which dramatically steps down deep into the heart of the ground floor plan and is used by students and staff as an informal lecture theatre and social space. Clad in distinctive metal panels and etched with patterns referencing a 19th-century ironworks that once occupied the site, the space celebrates craftsmanship and the artistic heritage of the Arts University.
