The University Design Forum's Research Group is doing something a little different at this year’s conference in Belfast on 9–10 June. 

As part of the 'Less is More' theme, we will be hosting a series of focused round table discussions exploring the future of large learning spaces in higher education. 

Structured around smaller discussion groups rotating every 20 minutes, the sessions will create space for open conversation between researchers, estates professionals and designers. Together we will explore questions including:

• What are the design qualities of successful large flat floor learning spaces?
• How are universities adapting inherited estates and existing buildings to do more with less?
• How have patterns of use changed before and after Covid?
• How can shared and interdisciplinary use shape future space strategies?

There is significant interest across the sector in how learning spaces are evolving, particularly as many institutions move away from traditional lecture theatres towards more adaptable and shared environments.
